Part-Time Counselor Intern (Detox)

Headquartered in Paterson, NJ, Straight and Narrow is the largest program of its kind. We provide innovative and compassionate services to individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. We are looking for dedicated, caring and compassionate people to work in our Residential/Outpatient Treatment Facilities and Community Programs.

Counselor Intern (Detox)

Schedule per week: Part-time Weekend (Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-4:30pm)

Location: Paterson, NJ

Job Summary:

The Detox Counselor functions as an integral part of the treatment team and provides individual, group and didactic sessions as well as case management services to the clients on his/her caseload ensuring that the treatment requirements of all regulating bodies are fulfilled.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assessing the counseling needs of the clients.
  2. Assessing clients using the ASI or using other standardized assessment tool and diagnosing clients for substance disorders using the DSM.
  3. Determining the appropriate level of care based on ASAM PPC.
  4. Obtaining previous records that are relevant to the current treatment episode.
  5. Collaborating with the client in order to develop a written treatment plan that is client-centered and recovery oriented and includes goals and measurable objectives.
    1. The director of substance abuse counseling shall develop, monitor and provide clients and the treatment team with written schedules that will be used to update each client treatment plan(s) in order to ensure that each client's treatment needs are addressed.
  6. Providing the substance abuse counseling services specified in the client treatment plan.
  7. Reviewing clients throughout the treatment episode according to ASAM PPC, to determine the need for continued services or discharge/transfer.
  8. Reviewing and, where necessary, revising the substance abuse counseling portion of the client treatment plan to address emerging problems.
  9. Developing the client discharge/transfer plans to ensure movement to the appropriate levels of care.
  10. Contacting referral sources, providing case consultation, and coordination with referral sources (for example: mental health treatment providers, criminal justice agencies, schools, employers, the Department of Children and Families).
  11. Participating as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients.
  12. Providing active case consultation; and
  13. Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals and follow-up in the client's clinical record, providing appropriate signatures and dating of such entries, including those made in electronic records.
  14. Conduct intakes for detox residents.
    1. Review and complete all required admission documents
    2. Provide new clients with basic information regarding our services/ programs
    3. Complete required modules in electronic health record and NJSAMS such as DMHAS Income Eligibility, Addiction Severity Index, DSM V, and LOCI. Obtain clinical authorization for admission when required.
    4. Forward designated documents to internal departments (e.g. medical department and welfare case manager)
    5. Communicate with program staff regarding completed admissions
  15. Submit all completed intake documentation to the Clinical Director for review in a timely manner. Ensure that files are inclusive to include all documentation as required by DMHAS and/or other credentialing entities.
  16. Establish and maintain positive, professional interactions and relationships with referrals sources, community stakeholders, and any person or organization making contact with Straight and Narrow.
  17. Maintain clinical portion of clients’ charts as per the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and CARF guidelines, ensuring that all documentation is up to date as per Straight & Narrow’s Policy on Timeframe for Documentation in Clients’ Charts
  18. Attend regularly scheduled multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT) and present information for Treatment Plan or Treatment Plan Review for clients on caseload
  19. Attend individual and group supervision with Clinical Supervisor as scheduled
  20. Provide clients on caseload with referrals to other agencies (i.e., health, psychiatric, vocational rehabilitation and public assistance) for concurrent and/or continued care as part of case management as necessary
  21. Provide crisis intervention to clients as necessary
  22. Submit documentation to Supervisor daily for any/all sessions held with clients on that day
  23. Attend and actively participate in all CQI subcommittee meetings and/or Grievance Committee meetings on which membership is held
  24. Participate in supervision, team meetings, and other agency committees as scheduled and/or assigned.
  25. Inform and submit documentation regarding progress towards obtaining CADC/LCADC on a quarterly basis to Clinical Director of Detox.
  26. Follow all Electronic Health Records (EHR) policies

Qualifications:

Must have a AA/AS/BA/BS/MA/MSW degree. Computer literacy and the ability to type is a must. Experience with Electronic Health Records a plus. If counselor does not have either a CADC or LCADC, must be actively pursuing one or the other Must complete CADC or LCADC within three (3) years from date of hire.
