Medical Assistant

Headquartered in Paterson, NJ, Straight and Narrow is the largest program of its kind. We provide innovative and compassionate services to individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. We are looking for dedicated, caring and compassionate people to work in our Residential/Outpatient Treatment Facilities and Community Programs.

Medical Assistant

Hours: 1:00pm-9:00pm

Location: Paterson, NJ

Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma
  2. Medical Assistant certification from and accredited education institution preferred or one-year experience in the field is required
  3. Good interpersonal skills are essential and able to work independently.

General Summary: Medical Assistant job is to help clients by providing information, services, and assistance. Other duties include securing medical records; maintaining medical supplies inventory; performing preventive maintenance to keep equipment operating.

Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Taking medical histories
  2. Obtain blood pressure, height, weight, temperature and glucose monitoring
  3. Complete Covid Testing via nasopharyngeal and nasal swabs on staff and clients
  4. Maintain inventory of stock office supplies
  5. Assist nursing staff with chart audit reviews
  6. Verifying insurance and assisting with prior authorizations
  7. Assist with EMR transition, filing and uploading of client records
  8. Preparing clients for examination and assisting physicians during exams
  9. Collecting laboratory specimens and completing EKG’s
  10. Assist in observing clients consume medication during sick call times
  11. Keep supplies ready by inventory stock
  12. Secure patient information and maintain confidentiality
  13. Provide direct supervision and support to clients on the unit when needed
  14. Maintain high visibility in client areas to provide structure and supervision
  15. Assist in maintaining safety and cleanliness of the facility
  16. Introduce self to all new clients on their first day on the unit and inform them of your role on the unit
  17. Have thorough knowledge of the clients’ handbook
  18. Be knowledgeable and able to perform new client admission process
  19. Maintain CPR and First Aid Certification active
  20. Assist with answering telephones in a professional manner
  21. Updated and filing clients medical records
  22. Scheduling Appointments and follow ups
  23. Call or fax prescriptions to the pharmacy
  24. Maintain temperature log of medication room refrigerators

General Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Workweek will consist of scheduled shifts by your supervisor (shifts are 8 hours) work per day including one hour for lunch or 30 minutes for lunch and two 15 minute breaks. Follow Straight & Narrow policy.
  2. Punch in/out on the employee hand recognition time clock and ensure that all staff on unit follows this procedure.
  3. Notify supervisor, prior to shift if unable to work due to sickness or personal emergency.
  4. Submit Employee Absence Report to supervisor on day of return to work after taking one or more sick day(s) via Paylocity
  5. Schedule Personal Time Off (PTO) in advance, at least 30 days via Paylocity
  6. Know and enforce Straight & Narrow’s Policies and Procedures.
  7. Ensure Policy and Procedure for Critical Incident Reporting is followed when indicated.
  8. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing scenarios and situations on the fly
  9. Being a team player that works fluidly with patients, families and interdisciplinary healthcare teams every step of the way
  10. Customer service: respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience, and helpfulness.
  11. Must possess a caring and compassionate attitude with those whom may be struggling with recovery
  12. Participate in discharge planning and preparation (of clients) in conjunction with counseling/clinical staff.
  13. Increase knowledge of treatment and client issues by attending and participating in staff development in-service sessions
  14. Complete all Straight & Narrow’s annually required trainings for staff.
  15. Attend in-service and other trainings, staff meetings and supervision as scheduled.
  16. Attend all meetings of CQI subcommittees of which you are a member and actively participate.
  17. Take responsibility for keeping Personnel file updated with regard to filing any new degrees or certificates, getting immunizations/medical test as required and keeping any licenses and/or certificates current.
  18. Perform other tasks as necessary or as assigned by a member of Straight & Narrow’s Administration.
  19. Review Company E-mail frequently during your shift
